How Focusing on Student Interests Instills Confidence

Guidance & Support

Every student brings unique talents, interests, and learning styles into the classroom. Some learn by doing hands-on activities, while others love storytelling, analysis, or seeing things done in front of them. Recognizing these differences can help educators create more meaningful learning experiences and help them prepare students for success beyond graduation.

Rather than expecting every child to demonstrate knowledge in the same way, our teachers at Insight School of Wisconsin (ISWI) can offer flexible approaches to meet students where they are while working through state-certified curriculum.

Simple strategies to learn more about how our students learn can make meaningful differences, like interest surveys, offering multiple choices to demonstrate learning, or even connecting their lessons to their hobbies and future goals to make school feel more relevant. In alignment with this, ISWI has developed shorter, flexible courses that are designed to meet student needs and interests simultaneously. These “mini” courses are 45 days in length or a school’s quarter (instead of a semester or a year) and encourage more frequent classroom wins that help make meaningful progress toward graduation.

The student’s interest approach supports more than just learning in the classroom; it helps students recognize their own capabilities and instills confidence in them to find what opportunities could shape their futures. ISWI’s mission is to meet students where they are in their educational journey and guide them to a place where they can feel good about what they are learning and how to continue moving forward.

Ultimately, how ISWI has transitioned their coursework from courses like American Literature and Biology to options like Journey into Journaling, History of Pop Culture, and Physics of Gaming is providing students with opportunities to connect with areas of current interest, explore new interests, and to identify and cultivate their unique abilities and potential. When educators work with students to nurture those interests and strengths, students can build confidence, develop essential skills, and discover new possibilities for their future.
